Accidentally vegan groups

Postby ethical_anarhist » Wed Jan 20, 2010 6:04 am

I'd like to say that one of the best things that happens to me as a vegan is when groups are 'accidentally vegan'. What i mean is that nobody actively promotes a group as a vegan one, but somehow in the seemingly unrelated area of discourse a group is composed of primarily vegans (or at least very vegan friendly) people.

Of course, it's also disheartening when it's the other way around; or when vegan groups are homophobic, sexist, anti-sex worker, pro-police, pro-military, etc; but then every so often this good 'accident' happens and i light up. q;-)=

London Anarchist Forum - it's a discussion group, it's not really composed of vegans, but when we go for a meal or somesuch, it's assumed that the place has to be at at least vegetarian and must have variety of vegan foods. The reason for that is that meat-eaters can 'tough it out' and eat vegetarian, while vegans can't really go anywhere else.

Communities of Resistance - it's a prison abolition group. That's quite different, we don't really do group meals with them; but i'd say the group is composed of about 80% vegans. This means that when we do events, food we provide is vegan (because the person who often volunteers to cook is vegan) and in general there's a 'vegan feel' to the group.

There was also 'All Gender Group' i am a part of, although that group has pretty much stopped after i couldn't attend any more. But regardless, when people were attending, i'd say about half of the people or more who showed up were vegan.

We had an animal rights meetup group in my old hometown. Towards the end of my stay there, about half of the attendees were people concerned with gender issues. They all came together, though, so it's not like there happened to be a bunch of unrelated folks with the same interests.

Ok, so maybe some people do come together, but that doesn't make it less good that you go to a group meeting, and find that people share other common grounds with you also.
