irony of fur

Postby panthera » Tue Mar 09, 2010 12:08 pm

I try to check out all the links people post on the regular ARCO forum, and I came across one about the cat/dog fur trade. It said that manufacturers were labeling their items as using imitation fur but using real fur b/c of the lower cost.

On the one hand, it's ironic that in this world that values "the real thing" over knock-offs, imitation fur is more valuable than real fur. Perhaps some folks would say this represents progress, in that anti-fur campaigns have succeeded in raising public awareness, and even in getting legislation passed.

But the cats & dogs whose very real fur, apparently stripped of them while fully conscious, might feel differently. Their fur masquerades as fake fur, because it is not even as valuable a commodity as fake fur. Somehow, that doesn't seem any more respectful than before.

Yes. And it casts a great doubt over campaigns that promote the idea of fake fur. Had they done some abolitionist education, they would have influenced the demand for fur. This way they just didn't take into consideration all factors of the production chain, and this thing back-fired. It's a shame to see all that educational potential to go to waste.

P.S. 68 views and no reply to this post? on one hand I like the fact that many people have read this (well, I guess at least 10), but I don't like the fact that we don't have any conversations :(
