I remember these types of situations well, the gut wrenching fear as you realise that the hunt is about to attack, you're seriously outnumbered and all the sabs are spread out. You've got hunt scum all over the place, all you can do is try to get everyone out in one piece, and often there's not even anywhere to go....

If you've got the courage and fitness to stand up to these people then please join your local sabbing group. Whilst I remember the fear like it was yesterday, (and I've got goosebumps just thinking about it), the animals need us and I'll be contacting my local group asap!

Sabs Attacked During Fox Hunt - Essex and Suffolk Hunt UK

Anti-hunt protestors claim that this afternoon police ignored blatant illegal fox hunting and failed to prevent a serious assault against them.

At the Essex and Suffolk Hunt, held at Bluegate Farm, Wherstead today (Sat 24th November) a hunt rider was seen to ride his horse over a female protester repeatedly, causing significant injuries to her legs and back.

While the hunt were in the vicinity of Freston Church, it is alleged that the hounds were chasing a fox over a road after emerging from a wood in pursuit. It is claimed that the huntsman was closeby and was doing nothing to prevent the hounds from chasing the live quarry.

The protesters saw no sign of an artificial trail having been laid, though he hunt did have a bird of prey. This would allow them under the Hunting Act 2004 to use two hounds (HW: Please note this is incorrect, a hunt can use as many hounds as they wish to flush to a bird of prey.) in order to flush a fox out of woodland to be killed by the bird. The fox however was seen being pursued by the whole pack of about 20 hounds, and the bird of prey was not in the vicinity.

When protesters attempted to turn the hounds back from the public road, they say the hunter galloped at two females, knocking one to the ground, then rode his horse over her on four or five separate occasions, a hoof only narrowly missing her head.

Lee Moon, spokesman for the Hunt Saboteurs Association commented, “It would appear to be business as usual in East Anglia almost three years after the hunt ban came into force. We are still seeing fox hunts acting as if they are above the law. Chasing and killing foxes and indiscriminate violence are traditions in this part of the country, and the Essex and Suffolk Hunt seem to embody these customs.

Several Hunt stewards from this very hunt were convicted of violence against protesters earlier in 2007, and two huntsmen in Essex have been found guilty of assault in recent years, one for assault on the police. The hunts are the lawbreakers and we will be pressing the police to fully investigate this horrific incident.

Several complaints had earlier been made to Suffolk police attending the hunt of illegal hunting and racist abuse, and with three vehicles and a video camera there would appear to have been sufficient resources to gain evidence of the hunt’s potential law breaking, but no police were accompanying the hounds when they were seen chasing the fox.”

Talking Points About Fur Farming

Those few individuals who still wear fur sometimes attempt to justify their actions by claiming their coat was made from animals killed on a fur farm or “ranch,” as opposed to animals that suffered for days in the wild caught in a trap.

There is a common misconception that the animals on fur farms are treated humanely. Unfortunately, there is nothing humane about depriving animals from their behavioral and physiological needs.

Consider these facts:

* Of the thirty-one million animals killed on fur farms each year, about twenty-six million are mink and 4.5 million are foxes. In addition, 250,000 chinchillas, 150,000 sables, 100,000 fitch, 100,000 raccoon dogs (a separate species from the American raccoon), and a small number of lynxes, bobcats, and coypus are also raised – and killed – on fur farms.

* Animals on fur farms are not able to engage in their natural behaviors. They are treated more like machines and commodities than living creatures with emotions. Their agony and certain death occur for the simple purpose of creating a luxury garment that serves no practical purpose – except, of course, to make money.

* Death for farm-raised animals is like something out of a horror movie. The most common method used for killing foxes is anal electrocution. Mink are usually gassed or violently injected with poison. Many animals have their necks broken.

* It takes sixty female mink to make a coat, thirty-five male mink, and a varying number of foxes depending on the breed; the most common number cited is forty.

Mink

* Mink fur is the backbone of the fur industry, and fox fur is quite significant in Scandinavia where 80% of the worlds’ fox farms are based. Mink are semi-aquatic animals native to North America. They are solitary creatures who spend a substantial portion of their day swimming. Mink are inquisitive and have a range of 2 - 1/2 miles. They are an active species that does not adapt well to life in a cage.

* On fur farms, mink are deprived of the proper amount of space they need because they are kept in cages averaging ten inches wide by twenty-four inches long. Cage sizes may vary a few inches larger or smaller, depending upon the individual fur farm. The lack of exposure to swimming in water is also believed to increase behavioral problems in ranch reared mink.

* Intensive confinement has severe psychological implications. Ranched mink often engage in neurotic behavior patterns. Many will move back and forth in a repetitive motion for extended periods of time. Tail biting is another form of self-mutilation that is common in captive mink populations. Self-mutilation is a hardship for fur farmers because it devalues the amount farmers can charge for the animals’ fur pelts.

* A Danish study indicates that as many as 17% of ranch raised mink will die prematurely as a result of various factors which could include stress, bad sanitation, heat, or cannibalism. Some years, as many as 10% of a fur farms stock may die from harsh weather conditions.

Foxes

* Life for ranch-raised fox is not any more promising. Fox farms have a very serious problem with cannibalism. Foxes in cramped living conditions often resort to cannibalism as a result of a stress-induced environment. It is estimated that fox farmers will lose 20% of their animals prematurely, with half of those deaths resulting from cannibalism.

Chinchilla

* The chinchilla industry proudly admits that most chinchillas are killed by neck breaking or electrocution. Chinchilla farmers hook one metal clamp to the ear, and another to the genitalia to implement the electrocution. Chinchillas are small, and as many as 100 of them are killed in order to make a single full-length fur coat.

Talking Points About Fur Trapping

Each year approximately 10 million animals are trapped in the wild, so that they can be skinned for fur coats. This suffering is multiplied when one considers the fact that an average of forty to one hundred animals must be killed to make one fur coat.

The primary tools used by fur trappers are the following: leghold trap, the body grip (Conibear) trap, and the wire snare.

Facts About The Leghold Trap

* A majority of Americans oppose leghold traps and other cruel body-gripping traps. A 1978 national survey conducted by Yale University professor Stephen Kellert for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service found that 78% of respondents opposed the use of steel-jaw leghold traps. In 1996, a national poll commissioned by the Animal Welfare Institute showed 74% of Americans opposed the use of leghold traps. Furthermore, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Animal Hospital Association, the World Veterinary Association, and the National Animal Control Association have all deemed the leghold trap to be inhumane.

* The leghold trap is made up of two metal jaws, powered by high strength springs, which slam shut on an animals paw when triggered. The initial impact of the steel jaws causes injury, but the majority of damage is caused as the animal struggles to break free. Within the first 30 minutes of capture, a trapped animal can tear her flesh, rip tendons, break bones, and even knock out teeth as she bites the trap to escape. In cases where animals are able to escape, many die from blood loss, infection, and inability to hunt with an amputated limb.

* Despite the overwhelming number of Americans who oppose the use of leghold traps, Congress has not banned its use nationwide and only eight U.S. states have banned or severely restricted its use. In contrast, eighty-nine nations have banned the leghold trap. As a direct result of public pressure, all fifteen-member nations of the European Union banned the leghold trap in 1995.

* Some leghold traps are set in a way as to kill an animal not to simply restrain them. Leghold traps set in the water and are called “drowning sets” and primarily target beaver, muskrat, and mink. The average time length required to actually drown an animal is nine minutes and thirty seconds. In one study, some beavers would hold on for as long as twenty minutes before their lungs gave out. Oddly, the fur industry argues that “drowning sets” are humane. This only serves to reinforce that their definition of humane is quite different than that of the rest of society.

* Leghold traps mutilate. They are non-specific in what animals they catch, and are a danger to companion animals and children. Traps will capture an animal other than the one the trapper was targeting. These are often referred to as “trash” animals, and are generally killed and thrown away. Those that are released usually die shortly thereafter from trap inflicted injuries. These non-target animals frequently include dogs, cats, birds, squirrels, opossums, and endangered species.

* In a public relations move to quiet critics, the fur trade started manufacturing padded leghold traps. These pads consisted of nothing more than a rubber strip across the jaws of the trap. The traps still had to close with the same force to hold a fighting mad wild animal. A 1995 study of coyotes trapped in padded leghold traps found that 97% of them experienced severe swelling to their legs, while 26% of them suffered from lacerations and fractures.

Facts About Snare Traps

* Another commonly used fur trap is the snare. The snare trap is made of cable, and is shaped like noose. When an animal walks through the noose, they are caught. The more a snared animal struggles, the tighter the noose becomes, the tighter the noose, the greater the animal struggles -- and suffers. It is truly a vicious cycle.

* The snare is primarily used on coyotes and is often set in areas where animals crawl under a fence or through some other narrow path. Body snares are designed to kill animals by strangulation or by crushing vital organs. However, like all traps, snares do not discriminate between victims and are likely to capture any animal that comes in contact with the trap, through and/or around any body part.

* While some studies suggest small animals become unconscious in about six minutes when neck snared, larger animals can suffer for days on end. Trappers have even coined a term -- "jellyhead" – to describe the thick, bloody lymph fluid which swells the heads and necks of neck-snared canines. Snares frequently have to be replaced after each capture due to the twisting and strain on the snare cable that naturally occurs when trapped animals struggle to break free.

* Because they are set on land and in water, snare traps are even more indiscriminate than leghold traps. Not only are they cheap and easy to set, but trappers often blanket a targeted area with dozens of snares in an attempt to capture as many animals as possible.

Facts About Conibear Traps

* The Conibear trap consists of two metal rectangles hinged together midway on the long side to open and close. One jaw has a trigger which is normally baited. The opposite jaw has a catch which holds the trap open. Originally intended as an "instant killing" device, the Conibear trap was designed to snap shut in a scissor-like fashion on an animal's spinal column at the base of the skull. However, because it is impossible to control such factors as the size, species, and direction of the animal entering the trap, most animals do not die quickly in the Conibear trap and instead endure prolonged suffering as the clamping force of the trap draws the jaws closer and closer together, crushing the animal's abdomen, head or other caught body part.

* Domestic dogs and cats are common victims of this indiscriminate trap. Numerous veterinary reports have shown that dogs and cats may be found dead or alive by their guardians in these traps after suffering for days. However, because it is extremely difficult to open Conibear trap jaws, most people are not able to free their animal companions in time.

* Conibear traps come in three standard sizes and are frequently used in water sets to trap muskrat and beaver. In addition, they are used on land to trap raccoon, pine marten, opossum, and other furbearers. Numerous research studies have shown that this trap does not kill instantly. One study of Conibear efficacy, showed that only 15% of the strikes might have been “instant” kills and a disturbing 40% of the animals studies were held in positions that most likely caused extreme pain. The study concluded that unless the animal is small or is struck on the skull or neck, this trap does not frequently kill instantly.

* Even Tom Krause, former president of the National Trappers Association, and current editor of The American Trapper is skeptical of the Conibear’s efficiency. Krause notes, "Traps of the standard Conibear design exhibit trigger aversion problems, and do not acceptably position sufficient numbers of animals for killing blows." (The American Trapper, January/February 1989).

Talking Points About Fur Trim

* In the past, the fur industry’s emphasis has been on full-length coats. With cost and conscience now influencing buying patterns fur trim is primed to take center stage as the primary focal point of the trade. Sales of traditional full-length fur coats have declined. As a result furriers have shifted toward an emphasis on fur trim to keep their businesses solvent. By disguising small amounts of fur through shearing, dying, and plucking, furriers are now able to market their cruel products to an unknowing audience. The latest figures from the Fur Information Council of America (FICA) reveals the fur trim market to be worth nearly $500 million annually.

* Most furriers have changed the focus of their advertising. In an attempt to keep their industry alive they now push fur trim on bikinis, blankets, hats, jeans, scarves, skirts, knitted sweaters, ponchos, purses, and vests.

* With the trim trade growing, the number of animals dying is also increasing. According to Sandy Parker Reports, a fur industry newsletter, the number of animal pelts used for trim will soon outnumber those used for all-fur garments in western European and U.S. markets. Demand for fur trim is currently so strong that some U.S. manufacturers, which typically produce only full-fur garments, are now moving into the trim business.

* The Fur Information Council of America (FICA) recently claimed that retail sales of fur rose 21% over the fall 2000-winter 2001 season to $1.69 billion. However, the income from fur storage, cleaning, and repair have traditionally been included in sales figures, and FICA only surveys select members of its organization for data. FICA no longer provides a breakdown of what percentage of revenue comes from services and what comes from the purchase of new fur products.

* The animals most commonly killed for fur trim are foxes. 90% percent of the foxes raised on fur farms are killed for the fur-trim market. Arctic or blue foxes are the primary type used, followed by the silver or red foxes. As of 2000, the total number of foxes killed on fur farms worldwide was 4.3 million.

* By actively marketing fur-trimmed items, the fur industry seeks to flood consumers with fur-buying options. Fur trim items are widely available and in many cases will not be labeled as fur. Fur industry publications report that furriers believe fur-trimmed garments will become more important than all-fur garments in terms of repeat business because such items need to be replaced in only a few years, while fur coats may last for 20 years or more. Furriers also believe that fur trim is what helped bring younger consumers to them.

24 FACTS - ANIMAL TESTING

Posted by Minoesj on 29 November, 2007 10:54

----------------- Bulletin Message ----------------- From: ROCK VEGAN.

If you think Animal Experiments are Necessary Consider The Following:

* Less than 2% of human illnesses (1.16%) are ever seen in animals. Over 98% never are.

* At least 50 drugs on the market cause cancer in lab animals. They are allowed because it is admitted that animal tests are not relevant.

* When asked if they agreed that animal experimentation can be misleading because of anatomical and physiological differences between animals and humans, 88% of doctors agreed.

* Rats are 37% effective in identifying what causes cancer in humans. Flipping a coin would be more accurate.

* According to animal tests lemon juice is deadly poison, but arsenic, hemlock and botulin are safe.

* 40% of patients suffer side effects as a result of prescription treatment.

* Over 200,000 medicines have been released most of which are now withdrawn. According to the World Health Organisation, 240 medicines are essential.

* Thousands of drugs passed safe in animals have been withdrawn or banned due to their effect on human health.

* Aspirin fails animal tests, as do digitalis (heart drug), cancer treatments, insulin (causes animal birth defects), penicillin and other safe medicines. They would be banned if results from animal experimentation were accurate.

* When the producers of thalidomide were taken to court, they were aquitted after numerous experts agreed animal tests could not be relied on for human medicine.

* At least 450 methods exist with which we can replace animal experiments.

* Morphine puts humans asleep but excites cats.

* 95% of drugs passed by animal tests are immediately disgarded as useless or dangerous to humans.

* One is six patients in hospital are there because the drug they have taken had been passed safe for us on humans after animal tests.

* Worldwide, at least 22 animals die every second in labs. In the UK one animal dies every five seconds.

* The contraceptive pill causes blood clots in humans but it had the opposite effect in dogs.

* We use aspirin for aches and pains. It causes birth defects mice, rabbits and rats.

* Researchers refused to believe that benzene could cause cancer in humans because it failed to in animal tests.

* Dogs failed to predict heart problems caused by the cardiovascular drugs encainide and flecainide, which led to an estimated 3,000 deaths in the USA.

* Heart by pass surgery was put on hold for years because it didnt work on dogs.

* If we had relied on animal tests we would still believe that humans dont need vitamin C, that smoking doesnt cause cause cancer and alcohol doesnt cause liver damage.

* It was denied for decades that asbestos caused disease in humans because it didnt in animals.

* Polio researchers were mislead for years about how we catch the disease because they had experimented on monkeys.

* As one researcher points out, the ultimate dilemma with any animal model of human disease is that it can never reflect the human situation with complete accuracy."

Human Overpopulation ~ The most ignored AR Issue

The Problem in Human Terms

So what is the problem with human over-population? Well, from a human perspective, the more people we have, the more we exacerbate the conditions of war, famine, nuclear waste, deforestation, urban crowding, pollution, poverty and all other social ills.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

How are these problems related to human overpopulation? Take war for example. People are driven to war when they lack the resources or land to provide for themselves. If the United States' population was low enough that it could be sustained by the oil produced within its own boarders, we might have never been involved in the Gulf War. But the United States population is not decreasing, it is increasing by 3 million people every year - 1 million of which is from immigration, and 2 million of which are from births - meaning that we will desire even more resources, and be involved in more wars. If every country had a fraction of their current population, many territorial and ethnic disputes would simply not exist.

We can also see how population effects poverty. Far from being the cornucopia we once thought it was, the Earth has limited resources. As it is burdened with more people, its ability to provide for their needs and wants decreases. Did you know that of the 5.8 billion people on earth today, over one billion of them live in absolute poverty and misery? This means that more people live in poverty today, than used to live on the entire planet less than 200 years ago. The fact that we can't adequately provide basic necessities for nearly one fifth of our species should alert us to the realities of the human overpopulation problem.

The Problem for Animals

Unfortunately the problem of human overpopulation does not stop at humanity's boarder, it also plays havoc on animals and the environment. On a basic level, the more people there are, the more people there will be to eat meat, wear fur, go to circuses and rodeos, hunt and demand animal research. It wouldn't be a stretch of the imagination to figure that if America's population was half its current size, the number of animals slaughtered for food would also be halved. If this were the case, more than 3 billion animals per year would be spared the horrors of factory farming and the slaughterhouse.

Does this mean human overpopulation would not be a problem if everyone became a vegan animal liberationist? Sadly, no. Because just as humans war with each other over land and "resources," we war with the animals over them too. Yet the animals don't have a fighting chance against our weapons, technology, and ravenous ability to consume. If we want some "natural resources," we will take them. The fact that billions of animals will be killed or displaced is inconsequential. "Natural Resource" is just another way of saying the spoils we have plundered from the animals' homes. All that humanity has, we have stolen from the animals. Lush forests, vast prairies, and raging rivers have made way for our lumber, cropland, and dams. There is no humane way to clear cut a forest, or construct a paved road across country, or to obtain the metal needed to make an airplane. All of these things necessitate evicting animals from their homes, destroying their communities, and directly or indirectly killing them. While humans - vegan or not - consume, the human population will continue to be a problem.

Just as the United States - which represents less than 5% of the world's total population - consumes 30% of the world's resources, the human population which is only one species among millions, consumes the majority of the world's resources. If we believe that animal's interests deserve equal consideration, then we must take action now to promote a more equal distribution of resources. Decreasing our consumption is important, but most people are unwilling to give up their cars, homes, books, schools, supermarkets, and other things we take for granted. So if we ever want to see substantial improvements in maintaining animal habitat, it is imperative we decrease our human population.

Every new human brought into the world is a vote for humans and a death wish for animals. This is easy to see if you have ever worked to protect wildlife. When you talk to people who think that goose poop warrants a death sentence for geese, or nibbled gardens means deer should be killed, the need for human population control becomes obvious. Everywhere humans and animal interact, there is a river of animal blood. The more humans there are, the more blood their will be.

And what will happen if we don't take measures to decrease the human population? Will we finally liberate animals from the vivisection labs, factory farms, fur farms, circuses, rodeos and zoos, only to place them in a world of asphalt, glass, and concrete? Will the best we have to offer the animals be the lifeless husk of our once lush world?

And what will we do for the baby turtles who die of suffocation as their homes are paved over? Or the snake crushed by the weight of the bulldozer making room for a new condominium? Or the panther who lost her life in the fire that destroyed her jungle home so humans could use the land to plant crops. We can protest this destruction and maybe delay the inevitable, or we can go to the root of the problem and start fighting human overpopulation now.

Taking Action

So what can we do about it? For starters, we must stop breeding. Some people might think it's fine for couples to have one or two children to help create a population "balance." I disagree. Population balance is not a goal, it's a start. We need a drastic decrease in human population if we ever hope to create a just and equitable world for animals. And the only humane way to decrease human population is to not add to it. It is imperative that those of us who are conscientious and responsible set a good example by not procreating from this moment forward.

Now some people might argue that one's decision to have children is a personal decision. This is true. Procreation is a personal decision. But eating meat, wearing fur, and hunting are all "personal decisions." The fact that our decisions are personal, does not erase the truth that our decisions have moral consequences. When bringing more humans into the world dramatically impacts the animals in a negative way, we - as the animals' voices - cannot be silent.

We need to recognize that human overpopulation is just as much an animal liberation issue as is our campaigns against vivisection. Educating others about this problem is essential. Animal groups should produce literature or publish articles in their newsletters on human overpopulation.

As part of this education, we need to help change long-standing values that promote procreation. Newly-weds should not be harassed about when they expect their first child. Sterility should not be treated as a disease that needs a cure. Women should never be made to feel that they have to give birth to be important.

Instead, we need to support couples and individuals who choose to live child-free. We also need to make operations like vasectomies and tubal ligation more available to young adults. Too often, doctors will refuse to give these operations if the person has not yet had a child. We also need to support legislation that will help family planing projects and humane population control measures in our own country and abroad. People who desire to be parents should be educated on the human overpopulation problem and informed of the thousands of needy children who are waiting to be adopted into loving homes.

One of the benefits of working on this issue is that it is an excellent way to forge alliances between other human rights and environmental organizations that are already taking action to curb human population. This is a perfect issue for all three movements to champion together.

Last Words

Whenever I discuss this issue, I fear I have done an inadequate job. The far-reaching implications of human overpopulation are so enormous that I cannot do it justice. That is why I am asking you to spend the next few days analyzing how human overpopulation affects the problems in the world that concern you. These problems could be anything from traffic jams, oil spills, or hunting to the AIDS epidemic, species extinction, or nuclear power. Look at these issues. Consider how human overpopulation impacts them. Imagine what would happen to these problems if our population was halved. Examine all of the ways human overpopulation exacerbates your problems and those of the animals.

And while you are doing this, examine your personal feelings on the issue. You have a decision to make, are you going to be part of the solution or part of the problem? Why or why not? Do you think it is natural for people to have children? Do you think breeding is one way to ensure that veganism and animal rights will be passed to the next generation? Have you always wanted to have children because you know you will be one of the best parents a child could have? If you have questions such as these, I ask you to assume my identity and guess what my response to them might be. In other words, really work at seeing both sides of the issue.

Finally, after you have taken a few days to digest and evaluate this information in relation to your life, please write down your insights, experiences and concerns about this issue and send them to No Compromise. We will print your comments and hopefully establish a dialogue that will help us determine what we, as a collective movement, are willing to do for this issue. Together, we will ensure that animals are given the justice they deserve.

Killing plants as apposed to killing animals

In her otherwise positive review of DOMINION, Natalie Angier criticizes author Matthew Scully for not examining the morality of killing plants for a vegetarian diet. There are three points she might consider regarding the moral "burden" presented by killing plants, as opposed to killing animals.

First, the sole biological purpose of pain is to ensure that a living organism gets away from or avoids potentially life-threatening dangers. Since plants are unable to escape life-threatening situations, there is no reason to imagine that they would have evolved a sense of pain. While plants may have some sort of "consciousness," they have no discernible nervous system. They do respond to stimuli and have evolved biological defenses against insect and microbial threats, but there is absolutely no rational basis for believing that plants experience pain.

Second, the most common means of reproduction by plants is the production of seeds embedded in edible fruit which is intended to attract animals who will then consume the fruit and later drop the seeds, along with natural manure fertilizer. The point of fruit, nut, and grain production by plants is for animals to eat it. (Since plants appeared on the earth 2 billion years ago and animals emerged only 600 million years ago, one could argue that animals were "created" solely to aid in plant propagation by spreading seeds.)

Third, while humans and other animals sometimes eat the entire plant or otherwise destroy the plant during feeding or harvesting, because of the high cost of meat production in terms of plant protein, people are responsible for far less plant consumption by eating plants directly rather than eating the animals who ate the plants. It takes something like 20 pounds of plant protein to provide one pound of beef. The plant protein/meat ratio is lower for the production of other kinds of animal flesh, but a pound of any kind of meat costs several times more plant protein than if one just eats the plant protein directly. This was basically the argument used by Francis Moore Lappe in DIET FOR A SMALL PLANET, when she pointed out that many more people could be fed (and fewer plants would lose their lives) if people adopted a vegetarian diet.

It is true that we cannot exist without some other organisms losing their lives. But if one truly believes that killing a carrot is as bad as killing an animal, then the moral imperative is to refrain from eating either instead of eating both. Thousands of years ago, the Jains of India categorized lifeforms by order of sentience, as a guide to eating in the spirit of "ahimsa", the guiding principle of Jainism which directs people to live their lives so as to do the least harm to others. Single-celled organisms (which had not yet been scientifically discovered) were listed as the lowest form of life. Then were plants, then fungus, then animals. Using the principle of "ahimsa" as a guide, some Jains to this day refrain from eating whole plants such as carrots, potatoes or mushrooms, but they would still acknowledge that eating animals is many times worse.

Animals and Plants - the Differences

Comments by Frank L. Hoffman - 29 Oct 2002

***********************************

Dear Kim:

Thank you very much for sending your excellent, and truthful, response to Natalie Angier's comments.

After receiving similar comments to hers about "killing carrots", etc., almost weekly, we have come to the conclusion that these people are not interested in the truth. They know the truth that animals feel pain and plants do not, but they are trying to subvert the truth in an attempt to justify their lust for meat and their insensitivity to the pain and suffering that they are contributing to.

Your response to eat neither animal nor plant if it causes pain is right on target, but we believe these people already know this truth.

The simple truth is that these people don't care that they are causing pain and suffering, which to us is evil. All they seem to want is their "pound of flesh" at any cost, and anything that they can do to subvert attention away from their lust for animal products helps them justify their acts to themselves and their fellow flesh eaters.

Similarly, hunters try to subvert attention away for the fact that they take pleasure in killing, which reflects an evil intent. So they come up with all kinds of excuses to subvert attention away from the truth:

"They give the meat the to the poor."

"If they didn't kill some of the deer, the rest of the herd would die of starvation."

"They only hunt for food, and they always kill instantly with the first shot."

To us, Natalie Angier's and these other people's comments show only a hardness of heart.

In the Love of the Lord,

Frank
